Sh*t Derby Girls Say
The DC Rollergirls share some of the odd little and funny phrases they find themselves saying every day.
Player

While the rest of you were watching the World Cup I was helping at River City’s Season’s Beatings. The event is a day of ECDX-style theme scrimmages involving skaters from all over Virginia and beyond.
I Head Reffed two, NSO’s two and played in one.
Once an year I let myself get sucked into a Refs vs Skaters bout. Here’s a picture of me falling small in front of one of my favorite players, Battery Operated from Charm City.
I only went to the box twice (a marked improvement over last year!) and enjoyed my roll as jammer killer in the back.
Participating in pack-work like this gives me a better understanding of no-impact contact for when I referee. A little bit of playing also deepens my respect for the hard work the athletes put in to be able to bout like this so often.
Saturday I reffed two scrimmages and then went up to Lancaster for a double-header
Continuing to live in my alternate universe where I pretend everyone is at the bouts to look at the refs.
I’ve never had anyone video just me at a bout before. It’s a cool perspective.
Also, pay attention to our Penalty Wrangler walking back and forth. No one picks up penalty’s like he does. Nick practically reads our minds and has it written down before you’ve finished the call.
Towards the end of my second bout jam reffing. Can you tell my Lead Jammer arms are about tired as all get out?
Paparazzi catch me reffing men’s derby again.
This was the Dallas Deception vs PVRD Dirty Dozen consolation bout.
Absolutely nothing was on the line this bout except pride and love of derby. PVRD was playing with 9 and then was down to 8 when one player fouled out.
This was one of the most epic bouts it’s ever been my pleasure to jam ref. Both teams brought it so hard and with such good sportspersonship. I loved the energy both these teams brought.
It’s time for you to quit hating on Men’s Rollerderby
There. I said it.
It’s kind of fun and tongue in cheek to laugh at how Rollerderby is the only sport where the Men’s side is looked down upon by the women’s side.
But yunno what, it’s time to get over it. Men’s rollerderby has arrived.
I just got back from officiating at the Men’s National Championship tournament and it was amazing. This tournament was as exciting as any of the WFTDA regionals this year.
The men’s teams have really elevated their game this year. Every bout I worked or watched, even the consolation bouts, were full of my three favorite things: heart, skill and strategy.
Men’s rollerderby is no longer an also-ran of teams doing this their spare time between refereeing WFTDA or laying down the track for women to skate on. These teams have worked and it shows. I loved helping out as an official but I also loved watching every single bout I got to sit for.
Tired of blowouts? Every bout I was in the stands for was a nailbiter all the way to the end.
Think the men aren’t playing a sophisticated game? Go to DNN and watch the chess match taking place in the first 10 minutes of Magic City vs NYSE.
Men’s Rollerderby has arrived. I’m celebrating the level of play every team brought to the tournament.
